Umur sebuah baterai itu ditentukan dari berapa kali jumlah isi ulang. Tergantung dari kapasitas dan kualitas si baterai.

1. Atur display sang Tablet PC
Ini adalah salah satu langkah yang paling ampuh untuk menjaga keawetan baterai kita. Caranya cukup atur tingkat pencahayaan, sebisa mungkin atur di level yang rendah agar baterai lebih hemat.

2. Stop beberapa aplikasi yang masih berjalan

Settings > General > Location services | anda bisa matikan fitur ini di sana bila ingin menghemat baterai.

7. Matikan fungsi update otomatis
Setiap ada update dan anda terhubung dengan jaringan internet, maka jangan heran bila tiba-tiba baterai anda menjadi boros.

8. Jangan terlalu sering melakukan check email
Kegiatan ini merupakan salah satu kebiasaan yang bisa membuat boros penggunaan baterai.

9. Biarkan baterai kosong terlebih dahulu
Jangan lakukan ini setiap hari, tapi setidaknya lakukan sebulan sekali. Biarkan baterai kosong baru lakukan pengisian hingga penuh (100%). Ini bisa meningkatkan umur baterai anda.

10. Jangan melakukan “over charge”

BERCA – Memang tidak ada korelasi langsung antara design Lego ini dengan penyembuhan kanker.

Namun, Mike Schropp sudah turut berkontribusi dalam komunitas komputer yang saat ini sedang fokus melakukan pengembangan ilmu komputer untuk membantu kegiatan medis, khususnya dalam penyembuhan kanker dan malaria.

Sebelumnya, Mike Schropp hanya ingin menciptakan komputer yang lebih cepat dari biasanya namun dalam perjalannya ia akhirnya memutuskan untuk memberikan sentuhan unik pada komputernya tersebut. Dan alhasil dirinya berhasil membuat komputer dengan menggunakan Lego.

Komputer ini menggabungkan tiga buah CPU dengan total 12 core didalamnya. Lalu dipadu menggunakan 3 buah Motherboards dan power supplies.

Remote canggih ini kabarnya juga tidak dijual ke perusahaan maupun perorangan.

RCS ini bisa mengacau sistem jalur kereta api sampai sistem tenaga nuklir milik sebuah negara. Namun para pakar sendiri mengatakan kalau ancaman dari perangkat seperti ini tidak akan bisa masuk dengan mudahnya jika sebuah negara sudah tahu cara kerjanya dan segera membuat rencana untuk pencegahan, seperti menidirikan sistem tunggal yang tidak terkoneksi dengan apapun untuk hal-hal penting di negaranya seperti penerbangan dan tenaga nuklir.

Ya, artikel yang kami tulis mengenai virus Duqu ternyata kini sudah benar-benar beredar. Bahkan kabarnya virus ini sudah mulai menyerang beberapa Negara besar di dunia.

Dan yang paling menonjol adalah serangan virus Duqu terhadap sistem komputer lembaga nuklir Iran. Pendahulunya Stuexnet memang juga pernah melakukan hal yang sama pada sistem nuklir Iran dan akhirnya menjangkiti kurang lebih 30 ribu komputer.

Lalu apa tujuan dari Duqu ini? Virus yang disnyalir dikembangkan oleh sumber yang sama dengan Stuxnet ini bekerja untuk meretas komputer dan menyerang langsung ke dalam jantung sistem. Virus tersebut akan berusaha untuk merusak dan menggali data serta informasi penting mengenai keseluruhan sistem.

Namun pihak Iran sendiri sudah menyatakan bahwa mereka telah berhasil menangkal Duqu dengan menyiapkan tim cyber, khususnya untuk melindungi sistem nuklir milik mereka.

"Software untuk mengontrol Duqu telah dikembangkan dan tersedia bagi lembaga dan perusahaan di Iran," ujar Brigadir Jenderal Gholamreza Jalali dilansir dari Reuters.

Informasi-informasi yang telah dikumpulkan oleh Duqu kabarnya akan digunakan untuk kepentingan perang dan menghancurkan beberapa industri penting sebuah negara. Dan semua menjadi begitu menyeramkan menyusul beberapa spekulasi yang menyebutkan kalau virus ini segaja dikembangkan oleh pihak tertentu untuk menghancurkan sistem nuklir di Iran.

BERCA - Berbagai merk tablet kini sudah mulai banyak beredar di pasaran. Para pelanggan pun sekarang sudah semakin sulit dalam menentukan pilihan.

Mungkin beberapa hal yang jadi pertimbangan adalah masalah kualitas dan budget. Ya, dua elemen yang saling tarik menarik tentunya.

Namun tidak selamanya teori itu benar, karena pasti ada beberapa produk yang bisa mencakup kedua elemen diatas, berkualitas dan tidak menguras kantong, dan itulah yang pasti dicari oleh banyak orang.

Biasanya beberapa penentu harga tablet diantara lain adalah fitur. Teknologi layar, fitur melakukan panggilan telepon, dan koneksi 3G. Tanpa salah satu fitur tersebut, maka sebuah tablet pc bisa menjadi sangat murah harganya.

Selanjutnya bila kita bicara soal dua teknologi ini, maka akan kembali lagi kepada pilihan para pembeli. Pertimbangan soal kenyamanan akan sangat kuat dalam pemilihan kedua teknologi layar ini. Sudah tentu perangkat dengan teknologi layar Capacitive bisa terbilang lebih nyaman dan lebih mudah ketika digunakan ketimbang Resistive (harganya pun lebih mahal).

Ketiga adalah fitur 3G dengan modem built-in di dalamnya. Apabila sebuah tablet pc sudah dilengkapi dengan modem built-in maka bisa dipastikan harga tablet pc tersebut akan menjadi lebih mahal dari tablet tanpa modem built-in. Dan perbedaannya bisa sekitar 1-2 juta Rupiah (dengan asumsi spesifikasi yang hampir sama).

Coba anda banyangkan, apabila kita tiadakan beberapa fitur diatas, maka kita sudah bisa mendapatkan sebuah tablet pc dengan harga yang sangat terjangkau tapi dengan kualitas (spesifikasi) yang sangat baik.

Tapi pasti anda akan bertanya-tanya, bagaimana caranya bila ingin melakukan koneksi internet tapi tanpa modem built-in di dalam? Nampaknya memang akan sedikit merugikan anda, secara koneksi internet memang merupakan salah satu kebutuhan utama pengguna gadget saat ini. Namun tunggu dulu. Bila kita bisa mengkonversi kerugian tersebut menjadi sebuah keuntungan mengapa tidak?

Apa pertimbangannya?

1. Bila sebuah tablet pc tidak dilengkapi dengan modem built-in di dalamnya, maka harga sudah dipastikan jauh lebih murah dari tablet yang memiliki modem built-in. Anda sudah menghemat uang untuk fasilitas tersebut (bila anda tidak terlalu butuh koneksi internet atau anda sudah berada di lingkungan wifi).

2. Mungkin beberapa dari anda sudah memiliki modem (dulu digunakan untuk koneksi Notebook/Netbook?) Jadi anda tidak perlu membayar lagi untuk fitur 3G tersebut.

3. Bila anda benar-benar membutuhkan koneksi internet tapi modem anda tidak kompatible dengan tablet pc anda dan tidak banyak lokasi hotspot di tempat tinggal anda maka solusi kedua adalah menggunakan modem/router wifi dari luar.

4. Keuntungan menggunakan modem/router wifi dari luar adalah anda bisa menggunakannya bersama-sama dengan perangkat lain.

5. Anda juga bisa memakainya bersama-sama dengan teman anda dalam satu lokasi bila sedang tidak berada di lokasi hotspot.

6. Mengurangi resiko kerusakan modem 3G yang bisa merembet ke komponen tablet lain yang berada di dalam.

Tablet Android Akan Kalahkan iPad di Tahun 2014, Mungkinkah?

BERCA – Dunia kini telah dipenuhi oleh gadget-gadget baru. Teknologi sudah tidak dapat kitahindari lagi, karena memang jalur perkembangannya sangat deras dan juga menarik minat mayoritas penduduk bumi ini.

BERCA – Sebuah situs dihack atau diretas? Memang itu adalah hal yang biasa terjadi dalam dunia internet saat ini. Namun bagaimana jadinya bila situs resmi milik instansi negara yang dihack?

Bukankah itu agak sedikit aneh? Pasti yang pertama kali muncul dalam kepala kita adalah bagaimana bisa situs sebuah lembaga pemerintah yang notabene telah memiliki budget yang cukup besar dalam hal pembuatan dan maintenancenya sampai bisa diterobos oleh orang tak dikenal, dan yang lebih parahnya lagi, kasus seeperti ini sudah sangat sering terjadi kepada situs-situs pemerintahan kita.

Baru-baru ini terjadi lagi kejadian yang seperti itu. Kali ini yang jadi sasarannya adalah situs milik Artileri Pertahanan Udara (Arhanud) Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Darat (TNI AD).

Situs para tentara ini dihack tampilannya sehingga berubah menjadi beberapa tulisan yang menunjukkan sedikit jati diri sang hacker. Seperti website, pesan, copyright dan contact email sang hacker.

Seorang musisi lawas, Pete Townshend menyebut produk Apple, iTunes sebagai sebuah “vampir digital”.

Pernyataan itu ia hanturkan lantaran dirinya kecewa dengan pihak Apple yang terus menerus mendapatkan keuntungan dari industri musik tetapi tidak melakukan dukungan terhadap para musisi.

Hal itu ia nilai telah mencederai ensensi dari “menghargai musisi”. Townshend menambahkan kalau seharusnya pihak Apple itu menyediakan fasilitas seperti dapur rekaman dan membuat label sendiri untuk musik Apple. Selain itu, Townshend juga mengatakan bahwa Apple harus menunjukkan apresiasi lebih dengan mengerahkan bantuan para pencari bakat untuk membantu bibit baru berkarir dalam dunia musik.

Pete sendiri merupakan musisi terkenal dari band The Who yang lahir pada tahun 1945. Selain sebagai gitaris dan vokalis, dirinya juga terkenal sebagai penulis lagu.

Teknologi resistif lebih murah dan mudah dibuat, namun dia tidak mendukung aktifitas multi-touch, yakni aktifitas yang memungkinkan kita untuk menunjuk dua titikatau lebih secara bersamaan (belum diketahui apakah fitur multi-touch pada resistive sudah dikembangkan apa belum). Tampilan produk yang menggunkan fungsi resistive juga cenderung kurang bagus. Bisa dibilang Resistive ini sebagai layar sentuh yang Pasif. Dan salah satu kelebihannya adalah ia lebih hemat energi dan bisa membantu orang-orang khusus yang bekerja harus menggunakan sarung tangan.

Sedangkan teknologi capacitive menggunakan metode perubahan kapasitif. isolator (kaca) dan lapisan terluarnya dilapisi oleh konduktor transparan (ITO)Touchscreen. Ketika jari manusia menyentuh permukaan kaca, maka akan terjadi perubahan medan elektrostatik yang dapat diukur sebagai perubahan kapasitansi ( prinsip kapasitor berawal dari medan listrik ) dengan kata lain fitur ini memanfaatkan aliran listrik yang ada di jari manusia.

Berbeda dengan teknologi kapasitif, teknologi ini lebih teliti dan lebih halus. teknologi ini hanya menerima input dari bagian tubuh manusia (karena bersifat konduktor ), jadi ketika sebuah benda mati menyentuh layar, maka tidak akan diproses (kecuali stylus khusus untuk Capacitive). Teknologi ini juga mendukung multitouch sehingga lebih populer digunakan pada gadget terbaru. Namun teknologi ini lebih mahal sehingga gadget yang menggunakan teknologi ini juga akan dibandrol lebih mahal. Capacitive sendiri tergolong teknologi layar sentuh yang bersifat aktif. BERCA – Nampaknya perubahan iklim teknologi membawa kita ke era peradaban baru. Dulu orang-orang rajin membaca Koran di pagi hari, meskipun sekarang masih ada beberapa orang yangmelakukan hal itu, naun lambat laun nampaknya E-Reader akan mulai menjamur di mana-mana.

Kini sudah banyak sekali produsen surat kabar yang memiliki website sendiri dan menerbitkan semua berita kedalam portal yang mereka miliki. Dan hal tersebu juga ternyata disambut positif oleh khalayak ramai. Survey pun sudah mengatakan kalau 14% pengguna tablet pc mengunakan gadgetnya tersebut untuk membaca berita. Namun yang miris adalah hanya 21% dari kumpulan orang-orang itu yang bersedia membayar untuk mendapatkan berita dari tablet pc mereka, itupun hanya sebesar $5 per bulan.

Dilansir dari CNBC bahwa New York Times pun semakin kewalahan ketika melihat hasil survey tersebut, itu dikarenakan mereka memang memberikan charge sebesar $5/minggu. Ya tentu itu adalah biaya untuk fitur spesial agar web portal mereka bisa diakses oleh tablet pc.

BERCA – Anda masih ingat dengan film klasik yang berjudul “Back To The Future”?

Ya itu adalah film yang bertemakan seorang anak muda bersama dengan professor ahli, pergi menjelajah dunia melewati ruang waktu.

BERCA – Ternyata memang dunia ini sudah terlalu jauh untuk kita bayangkan. Anda tahu virus Worm yang sering beredar di komputer untuk menggangu para penggunannya? Bahkan sebagian besar dari anda mungkin sudah pernah digganggu oleh mereka.

Nah beberapa waktu lalu kita mendapati berita bahwa virus worm bernama Stucxnet lah yang menjangkiti system nuklir milik pemerintah Iran. Dan beberapa orang mulai meyakini bahwa Stuxnet itu sendiri adalah sebuah virus yang sengaja dirancang oleh pihak-pihak khusus.

Bahkan dilansir dari nytimes, Stuxnet sudah menjangkiti 10.000 komputer di 155 negara seluruh dunia.

“American-Israeli project to sabotage Siemens Corporation computers used in uranium enrichment at the Natanz site.” Terang Nytimes.

Bahkan salah satu pakar sekuriti komputer dari Symantec pun takjub dengan virus yang satu ini.

Menurut dirinya virus sejenis akan muncul lagi dengan fitur yang lebih canggih dan cara mereka memasuki sistem sang target sangat sulit untuk dipahami. Nama virus tersebut adalah “Duqu”.

Yap itu sedikit spesifikasi dari Relion RealPad.

Nah sekarang saya mau coba bahas sedikit bentuk fisiknya.

Secara keseleruhan RealPad ini cukup oke buat anak-anak muda khususnya karena bentuknya yang tipis dan ringan. Setelah itu bahannya pun terbuat dari Alumunium Alloy, beda dari beberapa tablet PC cina yang masih berbahan fiber.

Kemudian pada bagian layarnya, dia sudah support Capacitive touch, yang artinya setau ane memang enak buat di sentuh2 (apaan kali di sentuh2 hehehe)… Trus udah 5 Touch point multi Touch…

Yah ada yang bilang mungkin spec ini udah biasa n relative di pasaran Tablet sekarang, namun mnurut ane harganya yang cuma sekitar 1,8jt (kalo gak salah) sepertinya sudah sangat oke.

Pas diputar video pun dia sangat oke, gambanya cukup jernih.

Nah Cuma menurut ane karena harganya murah pasti ada kekurangannya donk?

Betul.. ada beberapa kekurangan dalam RealPad ini. Salah satunya adalah support 3g dan HSDPAnya dongle (sama dengan produk-produk harga 2jtan) yakni harus colok modem lagi biar bisa konek Internet, yah walaupun dia udah support wifi sih, tetep aja harus bawa2 modem kalo ke tempat yang tidak ber-Wifi. Dan menurut pihak Relion Modem yang support sampai saat ini baru Huawei.

Terus ya seperti Tablet cina, mengapa murah? Ya karena dia gak support GSM alias gak bisa melakukan panggilan telpon. (Kalau ane sih gak masalah, sampai saat ini masih pake HP buat komunikasi) hehehe… kyknya jarang deh ada orang nelp pake Tablet? (apa Cuma perasaan gw aja?)

Malaysia Berikan Bantuan Netbook, Indonesia Bantu Anak SMK Untuk Merakit

BERCA – Dilansir dari Bernama, pihak pemerintahan Malaysia dilaporkan telah memberikan bantuan Netbook kepada anak-anak sekolah tingkat dua.

Badan komunikasi dan Komisi Multimedia melalui Direktur nya Mohd Shafie menyatakan bahwa program ini bertujuan untuk membantu anak-anak yang kurang mampu agar bisa tetap mendapatkan informasi bermanfaat dari seluruh dunia.

Selain itu, beliau juga sangat berharap bisa membantu anak-anak dalam proses belajar baik di rumah maupun di sekolah.

“Tujuannya adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan membantu mereka dalam belajar. Kami berharap agar mereka tidak menggunakannya untuk kegiatan yang tidak baik,” ujar Mohd Shafie Harun.

Bantuan ini berbentuk 300 buah Netbook yang akan dibagikan kepada 11 sekolah berbeda. Netbook itu akan diterima oleh anak dengan penghasilan orangtua dibawah RM3000/bulan.

Untuk Indonesia sendiri, Kemendiknas sudah melakukan kerja sama dengan para produsen PC, Laptop, Proyektor dan Netbook tanah air seperti Relion dan Zyrex.

Program itu ditujukan kepada anak-anak SMK (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan) dengan memberikan pelatihan perakitan produk-produk IT tersebut lalu hasil rakita akan diberikan secara gratis kepada seluruh sekolah SMK penerima hampir di seluruh tanah air.

Anak-anak yang merakit produk-produk itu juga akan menerim bayaran dari hasil rakitan mereka, hal tersebu bertujuan untuk lebih memacu semangat para siswa agar semakin giat melakukan kegiatan perakitan.

BERCA - Berdasarkan hasil perhitungan yang didapat dari Net Appications, NetMarketShare per bulan September kemarin, Internet Explorer masih merajai browser usage dunia.

Peningkatan memang terjadi pada browser-browser lain seperti Opera dan Google Chrome. Bahkan Safari pun juga mengalami peninggkatan pengguna menjadi sebesar 5.02% dalam kurun waktu 12 bulan ini.

Namun beberapa browser tersebut belum bisa mengalahkan dominasi IE hingga saat ini. Meski IE dan Firefox harus mengalami penurunnan, namun kedua browser tersebut masih merajai para surfer di seluruh dunia.

September 2011 Firefox menunjukkan angka 22.48%, turun sedikit sejak tahun lalu (23.69%). Sedangkan Google Chrome hingga kini menguasai 16.20% pengguna web browser dunia, naik dua kali lipat yang tahun lalu masih berkisar di angka 8%.

BERCA – Perkembangan dunia IT memang begitu pesat, terlebih lagi bila melibatkan salah satu perusahaan terbesar dunia, Microsoft.

Sukses dengan Windows XP dan gagal dengan Vista miliknya, Microsoft mulai kembali merajai pasar dengan OS keluaran terbaru mereka Windows 7.

Namun belum terhenti sampai di situ, kini rencananya Microsoft akan kembali mengeluarkan OS terbaru yang akan diberi nama Windows 8.

CEO Mircrosoft, Steve Ballmer mengatakan bahwa Microsoft kemungkinan akan meluncurkan Windows 8 pada tahun 2012 mendatang.

Windows 8 dasarnya mendukung dua jenis aplikasi. Salah satunya adalah aplikasi Windows klasik, yang berjalan di desktop yang sangat mirip dengan desktop Windows 7. Jenis lain dari aplikasi, yang harus ditulis dalam Html5 dan JavaScript, lebih mirip aplikasi mobile, mengisi tampilan dalam layar penuh. Internet Explorer 10, yang merupakan bagian dari Windows 8, telah dikonfigurasi untuk dijalankan dalam modus ini, karena memiliki beberapa widget seperti aplikasi untuk memeriksa harga saham dan cuaca.

Antivirus Microsoft Deteksi Chrome Sebagai Malware. Apa maksudnya?

BERCA – Baru-baru ini terdengar laporan bahwa ada update terbaru software anti virus milik Microsoft yang mengakibatkan sebagian orang kehilangan browser mereka Google Chrome.

Hal tersebut dikarenakan Microsoft Security Essentials yang terbaru mendeteksi software Google Chrome sebagai Malware.

Alhasil banyak pihak yang bertanya-tanya apa maksud dari kejadian ini. Karena kini orang mengira Microsoft mulai melakukan sedikit “senggolan” kepada pesaingnya dalam hal software browser.

Namun dilansir dari iTWire, pihak Mircrosoft segera mengeluarkan pernyataan dan minta maaf kepada seluruh pengguna software Google Chrome.

"Pada 30 September 2011, terdeteksi sesuatu yang salah, PWS: Win32/Zbot diidentifikasi dan sebagai hasilnya, Google Chrome secara tidak sengaja diblokir dan dalam beberapa kasus dihapus dari PC pelanggan. Kami bekerja cepat agar semua bisa diperbarui (1.113.672.0) di 09:57 PDT untuk memperbaiki masalah ini,” pernyataan Microsoft.

"Pelanggan yang terkena dampak secara manual harus memperbarui Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) dengan updatean terbaru. Untuk melakukan ini, cukup memulai MSE, pergi ke tab update dan klik tombol Update, dan kemudian instal ulang Google Chrome. Kami mohon maaf kepada seluruh pelanggan kami atas ketidaknyamanan ini. "

Menanggapi pernyataan tersebut, pihak Google pun juga segera mengeluarkan pernyataan tertulis dengan nada yang cukup tenang dan tidak menyalahkan pihak manapun.

"Sebelumnya hari ini, kami telah mendapati bahwa Microsoft Security Essentials mulai salah mengidentifikasi Google Chrome sebagai bagian dari malware (" PWS: Win32/Zbot "). Dan menghapusnya dari komputer orang. Jika Chrome anda bekerja dengan benar untuk Anda, maka anda tidak perlu untuk mengambil tindakan apapun. Kami merilis sebuah update yang secara otomatis akan memperbaiki Chrome untuk pengguna yang terkena selama 24 jam berikutnya," ujar pihak Google.

Baru-baru salah satu pakar medis menyebutkan kalau trend penggunaan Touchscreen telah membuat semakin meningkatnya bahaya orang-orang terkena cedera pada bagian leher.

Hal tersebut dikarenakan kebiasaan membungkuk ketika kita menggunakan layar sentuh.

Dilansir dari Telegraph.co.uk, penyebab utamanya cedera leher tersebut karena urat-urat saraf dan otot di leher tidak dirancang untuk menopang berat dalam waktu yang terlalu lama.

Oleh karena itu kini dihimbau para pengguna gadget-gadget Touchscreen tersebut tidak terlalu “terlena” dalam menggunakan perangkat canggihnya itu, dan sesekali melakukan perenggangan leher.

“Coba anda banyangkan berdiri diam selama 10 menit saja, pasti kaki anda mulai terasa kaku atau nyeri bukan? Apalagi leher anda,” ujar salah satu dokter di klinik kota Leeds Rachael Lancaster.

Meski tidak terlalu kelihatan dampaknya, tapi memang kelihatan cukup masuk akal alasan ini. Mungkin sebentar lagi kita akan melihat inovasi dari para produsen gadget karena isu-isu kecil seperti ini, atau malah mungkin kita akan melihat inovasi obat untuk sakit leher? Enter the Smartbook via the Skylight

Having still not yet entirely conquered my desire for a netbook—mostly staved off by the fact that my iPod Touch gets the job done most of the time—there may yet be good news. It is quite likely that I have simply waited long enough for netbooks to be, well, so last decade.
Enter the smartbook.
BoingBoing Gadgets writer Bob Beschizza points out, the very name itself may be up to debate. Regardless, smartbooks are just, well, smaller netbooks that function more like smartphones. And come this April, Lenovo is planning to make the Skylight, the first of its kind, available to the public.
What the heck is the Skylight, and why should we care? The Skylight, according to the official Lenovo press release, is “the first ARM-based processor smartbook device based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™ chipset platform.” While it’s not the first netbook or device using this platform, which boasts longer batter life and lower power consumption along with higher performance, it is the first sub-netbook to do so. (Other gadgets using Snapdragon include the Nexus One, the Android-based Acer Liquid A1 Smartphone, and the Toshiba TG01.) Worthy of note, as well, is the fact that Snapdragon can also decode HD video, up to 720p—pretty impressive for a tiny portable computer, and a particularly nice feature for traveling geeks.
Skylight has some surprisingly decent specs for a very reasonable $500 retail, including:

3G and WiFi capabilities (and the purported ability to go “seamlessly” between)
A web-optimized interface (in other words, Facebook on your desktop, etc.)
Up to 10 hours of battery life
10″ display
Large keyboard (of particular importance for those of us who, you know, type. A serious flaw with many netbook designs.)
Qualcomm 1Ghz chipset with 20GB of standard flash and 2GB cloud storage

And what about an actual operating system? As Bechizza explains:

The Skylight doesn’t come with Windows, OSX or even (it seems) a fully-featured linux distro, which creates breathing room for its hardware–think smartphone operating systems–even as it creates a new hurdle for buyers in the lack of available software.

Of course, there are unanswered questions. It’s clear that AT&T is involved, but to what extent? If the $500 price-tag is with an AT&T contract, well, that would pretty much negate the whole deal. It would seem like an unfathomably bad move. No, the Skylight is no iPhone. But I think there are enough ornery folks out there (like myself) who have no desire whatsoever to sign up for a two-year phone contract with AT&T, even if it does come with a snappy smartbook.

Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 10.1-Inch Black Onyx Netbook - 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

Well, it looks like I'm first. I have this dream of having a laptop in every room that I use a lot in the house. Mainly my living room and bedroom. I already had two work laptops in my home office and call me lazy but I was tired of carrying the one I use out of the office, up and down the stairs, running out of battery and having to go get the power cord. I decided a netbook might be a good choice for my minor chatting and surfing.

I couldn't decided between this model and the HP Mini 311. I ended up ordering the HP and buying this one at my local store. This model is very slick looking. I got the Blue one and its very elegant. You wouldn't mind being seen out with this laptop.

When I got it home I took it out of the box. The battery was already in the netbook but had 0 power so I needed to charge it. I haven't yet tested how long the battery lasts, I'll come back to update that.

Out of the box the laptop had me name my netbook then it found my wireless router right away. That was really nice not to have to configure anything. I just put in my routers password and I was on. No work, no hassle no headache.

My unit is running Windows 7 starter edition. I see the Win7 has moved the programs you are running to the bottom of the screen, similar to Mac's Dock. Microsoft could have made them look a little better but that has nothing to do with this netbook.

I had a few concerns owning a netbook. My husband has one of the original eee Asus Netbooks and I can't type on those to save my life. Not to mention they get hot enough to cook on. So going in I knew I did not want these two issues.

I have on a pair of thermal (like long johns) material PJ's and this netbook has been surfed on and chatted with on Aim for the last 7 hours straight. I played a 7 minute youtube video about 10 times trying to get the bottom of the netbook hot. The netbook is a little warm but it never got so uncomfortable I needed to put a book under it. I can't tell you how happy I am about that.

The trackpad is nice and wide but I have on accident hit it a few times. I think once i'm use to typing on it, this will improve. If not, hopefully I can disable it.

The keyboard is the chicklet style I believe they call it. Similar to those on the MacBook. They are really pretty silver finish but they are also smooth and a little slippery. I think my biggest gripe with this is that they are evenly smooth across the keys. I think a dip in the keys would have given these a better feel. Still for a netbook the spacing on them is quite usable.

I really like the blue and silver color scheme of this netbook. Its small and light weight and I think I can fit it in my purse. And with 9 hours of battery life, I can see why netbooks are really taking off.

So far I've only ran into one issue. I had about 12 IE tab windows in total open and I was in chat and I hit a slow down where IE barely responded. At the time my memory was nearly 800MB. I think once I take this up to 2 gigs then it will be fine. I've since installed Google Chrome and its been even more snappy.

This unit has a generous amount of USB connectors. At 3 it has more then my MacBook has which is great in this tiny package. It also has a ethernet port, Mic and Headset jack, and of course a SD/SDHC card slot.

With its long batter life, like weight, great style, I think I am going to enjoy carrying this around and not minding it.

My youtube video up until I had to much running actually played quite well. I didn't notice any slow downs until I over taxed the system.

This notebook is almost perfect. The biggest gripe of all I have is the sound. Its nearly non-existent on this netbook. I think the biggest issue is the placement of the speaker. Its underneath the netbook and gets covered by your lap. Nothing a headset can't solve but I thought I would point it out.

**Update** I wrote this at 3am and in my rush to get to bed, I forgot to mention two important things.

1. The screen. The screen is just gorgeous for a netbook. Its bright, and colorful and even when you pull it off of AC power to go to the battery it dims a little but not so much that it becomes uncomfortable.

Keep in mind it does have a terrible 1024 x600 which only affects how much scrolling you'll do. As far as text goes, its very sharp and readable.

2. The Battery. I'm currently using the Netbook on battery and I find that it remains cool. It hasn't heated up on me after about an hour of use.

The next part about the battery is that it juts out the back about an inch so that its not flush against the netbook. This will probably mean you may have to get a bigger case besides the 10.1 inch size. Even though the battery sticks out the back, it does sit flat on a flat surface. The battery doesn't raise the back end up at all.

**Update Two**
As promised I said I'd be back after testing the battery. I unplugged the AC power at exactly 12 Noon. Between 12 noon and 12 midnight, I've had a 2 hour nap, and 1 hour watching my favorite TV show. The netbook set idle and went into sleep mode during those times. Before I went to sleep I stuck my iPhone on it so it could charge it. This took my battery down to about 94% by the time I awaken again. It is now 11:55PM or five til midnight. That's 12 hours being off AC power. I am at 13% battery life.

Subtracting time for my nap and TV watching, I had roughly 9 hours of battery life. This was only using it to surf and chat. I haven't run youtube videos or anything like that. I didn't do any energy savings to try and get more life from it. I used whatever it defaults to and I'm really happy with it. Before when I tried to conserve battery the screen would be so dark I could barely see it. This has been a pleasure to use.

I've used it on my lap all day. No heat issues. The palm rest stays cool and the bottom is barely warm. I've yet to install any ''real'' programs on here besides Aim. I will attempt Microsoft Office 2007 once I have that 2GB stick and i'll let you all know how that goes.

I have a 2GB stick coming tomorrow. I will update more later.

Also, I'm completely use to the keys now. My one point off is for the sound. Its REALLY low. It is a netbook, but if sounds important to you without using a headset, this isn't the netbook for you.

**Update three**
I plugged the net book in last night a little after midnight at 10% remaining charge. I find while the battery last a long time, it takes a long time to charge. I took about 3 hour and 40 minutes give or take a few minutes to go back to 100% charge. Still, for the battery life you get I think thats small, however it may stop you from wanting to buy a second battery.

Another side note, I'm finding a few of my XP/Vista programs won't install. Microsoft messenger and Aim installed fine. My 3m Post-it-notes (XP and Vista compatible)won't. This isn't because of the netbook but because of windows starter. Apparently if you upgrade to one of the the other Windows 7 offerings, their is compatibility with XP and Vista. Windows 7 Starter is crippled because of this. They've even taken away your ability to change your desktop background, you have to pay the 80 dollar premium if you want these features. I thought I would point this out, while 80 for an Upgraded OS is not bad, it is expensive when its nearly 1/4 the cost of the netbook. XP while old was still a full OS and I myself never had a problem with it getting the job done. If you wait until there is a Windows 7 Version you'll be fine but it could mean buying software over you already own, making Microsoft's upgrade cheaper in the end.

I just popped in 2GB of memory. I can confirm the one spot that gets warm on the netbook is the memory. I'm very surprised I feel no heat from the hard drive.

This review has turned into a book. I may comeback if I find anything worth while to inform you about.

**Update 4**
Per request, I've started testing video playback. I played a couple of YouTube videos and the playback was pretty smooth. I didn't notice any jerkiness and it was actually better then I thought it would be. I also watched a few clips on Hulu and as long as it wasn't in full screen mode, playback was pretty smooth. In full screen model I notice some very subtle frame drops or skips. I say subtle because I was studying it to see if I noticed anything. If I hadn't been looking for it I'm not sure if it would have hampered by experience or not.

I finally tested a pair of headphones and Music playback was smooth and nice and loud, so a headset won't be an issue with this Netbook.

I noticed when I'm installing programs that the memory does heat up. Thats the only time I noticed it heating up beyond its normal temps. I wish I had a temp monitor so I could see what idle temps are. If I find one I'll post it.

If you want better Video playback, go with the HP 311. The Nvidia ION 9400 is going to be a lot better for video and output in HD.

Acer to make the Chrome netbook a reality

Acer has announced that it plans to be the first manufacturer to produce hardware running Google’s Chrome operating system.

Chrome is a Linux-based system which is centered on the existing Google-made browser. It’s aimed primarily at users who want a low-cost machine for internet use and a few basic applications. The system is really just a souped-up browser which contains hardware drivers and links to on-line applications. One of the main selling points is that the system allows ultra-fast start-ups, meaning it can be used in devices which allow you to start using a website almost as quickly as you can turn on a TV and watch a show.

Though there are tentative plans to offer Chrome on machines with solid-state drives, the recently-released source code is designed for use on machines with no storage, the idea being that all data is kept online through services such as Gmail and Google Docs.

According to Asian tech business newspaper Digitimes, Acer says it expects to be the first firm to release a Chrome-based netbook, probably some time in the second half of 2010. Acer had already been the first company to sell a computer running Android, Google’s operating system better known for its use in smartphones.

It looks likely that Acer won’t be alone in developing Chrome-based products. One person working for Dell has already used the source code to produce a customized version of the system for the firm’s Mini 10v netbook, complete with the relevant drivers. It’s pretty much proof-of-concept at the moment and, though Dell has made it available for download, the creator freely admits it is “highly experimental and completely unstable.” Still, it does show firms are interested in creating versions of Chrome customized for their machines, which makes it much more likely that consumers will be able to simply buy a computer, turn it on and use it without needing any technical knowledge.

If you really do want to try out Chrome, there is a version that’s already been created to run from a USB stick. It’s available as a compressed 300MB torrent which unzips to a ~~3GB~~ 1GB disk image file, so you’ll need a ~~4GB~~ 2GB key to be on the safe side.

Given that there’s no guarantee of driver compatibility with your hardware, and that it doesn’t really offer anything in practical terms that you can’t already get from simply using a browser, it’s really only of interest if you want to nose at some new technology just for the fun of it. (And there’s nothing wrong with that…)

eePC laptop has WiMAX inside

EEPC wins design award at CES, will ship with "WiMAX inside"

ASUS, an Indian manufacturer of laptops (one of the world's largest) won an award for innovation for its eePC small (7" screen) laptop at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. What's also significant about the eePC is that ASUS will integrate WiMAX in it making it the first laptop to ship with "WiMAX inside". I'm using quotation marks here with care as Intel has announced plans to use the two-word phrase "WiMAX inside" for marketing with its ecosystem partners. The eePC currently ships with Wi-Fi.

The next version of the eePC will ship with a larger (8.9") screen and with WiMAX. This should put ASUS ahead in the race toward getting a native WiMAX laptop on the market. In addition to the consumer market, a WiMAX-enabled eePC should do well in education markets where a school district or university could deploy WiMAX "native" for student and faculty use. The WiMAX-enabled eePC could also have a quick uptake in enterprise markets as well especially for mobile workers.

Coffee Shops Unplug Laptop Users; WiMAX Plugs Them Back In

You may have seen the recent report from The Wall Street Journal on how many coffee shops in New York City are putting an end to computer usage in their stores. For those of us, especially people who may work from home and want a change of scenery, or students taking a break from the library, coffee shops and laptops go hand-in-hand. In fact, it’s rare to be in a coffee shop and not see someone on their computer and more than likely, on the Internet the majority of that time.

While it is understandable shops are frustrated people will sit in their store for hours, buying only a cup of coffee, there is an alternative to banning laptops from cafes. Like a dog tethered to a leash, consumers are restricted when it comes to Wi-Fi hot spots, normally found inside, when trying to get on the Internet. But here is the shameless plug… mobile WiMAX is just that - mobile!

When a story like this is written, it reminds me how lucky I am to live in Portland, OR where WiMAX is a reality and the combination of coffee shops and the Internet are so last season. I can use my computer and get a super-fast wireless broadband connection while sitting outside on a park bench, riding the MAX public transportation or even on the freeway at 60 miles an hour (in the passenger seat of course). In places like Baltimore, people can even connect to the Internet with WiMAX on boats!

With WiMAX, the possibilities for connectivity are endless. In addition to my own fair city, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Atlanta can enjoy WiMAX today and Clearwire is slated to launch service in New York next year, so soon New Yorkers can soon have their coffee and log on too!

Wimax the Future Technology for Netbook / Laptop

WiMAX is not WiFi
Currently, the inclusion of mobile WiMAX chips in laptops is often cited as a key indicator of future mobile WiMAX success. Advocates of mobile WiMAX point to the impact of WiFi-equipped laptops and how this use created the demand for increasingly higher annual WiFi shipments. The same impact is predicted for WiMAX equipment as well as carrier acceptance for WiMAX in the near future by these same advocates.

In reality, the only similarity between WiFi and mobile WiMAX is that both are what they are, wireless technologies. But to render any comparison between the two beyond that simple fact and to project market success from such comparisons is risky at best. Understanding why WiFi actually succeeded and how the WiMAX and WiFi markets differ is crucial to refuting dubious assumptions regarding the impact of laptop WiMAX.

Why WiFi has Blossomed
WiFi gained widespread acceptance due to standardization, a multitude of applications and resulting price point reductions. But above all else the widespread acceptance was due to the proliferation of consumer broadband and the subsequent desire of consumers to access that connection from multiple computers within their home. Inclusion of WiFi within laptops, which is often cited as a major contributor to the success of WiFi, came after growth patterns were already established.

The initial success and much of its subsequent growth of WiFi use is a product of a meaningful application utilizing WiFi access, i.e., the use of portable broadband within the house or small business. The success was not due to Intels decision to promote WiFi within laptops, although marketing never hurts.

A World without Cable/DSL
Eliminate widespread consumer of adoption of DSL and cable modems from the equation and a very different history of WiFi would have ensued. Would consumers care about laptop WiFi if they lacked broadband connections in their home or small business? Not likely.

But wait, surely both consumers and businesses would still employ those WiFi equipped laptops to access hot spots, right? Possibly, but one must factor into the equation the cold fact most hot spots are backhauled by consumer grade DSL and cable modems. So, once again, the outcome may have been very different without the widespread availability and acceptable price points for DSL or cable modem access.

The Differences
WiFi is ultimately a consumer accessible technology while WiMAX is a carrier platform. Consumers and businesses are building WiFi infrastructure and operating it in unlicensed frequency bands and they can do so by purchasing a sub $200 WiFi kit at a local electronics retailer. Purchase of a laptop with WiFi may actually stimulate further deployment of WiFi routers and other infrastructure, typically to share broadband access. It may also stimulate owners of that device to employ hot spots which have been built out by consumers, municipalities, coffee shops, airports, etc and which are typically backhauled by inexpensive DSL/cable technologies.

In contrast, mobile WiMAX base stations are priced well beyond the means of consumers and small businesses at thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, for a macro base station. The most attractive bands for WiMAX use, which are 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz, are licensed to wireless carriers so to use these networks, most likely, you will have to wait for them to be built and then pay monthly for usage.

In addition, unlike WiFi, WiMAX has no killer app. The benefits of mobile WiMAX to consumers or carriers remain unclear as does the actual performance of mobile WiMAX. Yes, carriers want an IP network and mobile WiMAX can provide that, but numerous simulations suggest a minimal to negative capacity advantage compared to HSDPA/HSUPA unless MIMO, which carriers are reluctant to accept due to the cost of placing more antennas on towers, is included on the WiMAX side and excluded from WCDMA (not exactly a fair fight). Questionable performance gains over existing technologies suggest that an economic incentive to deploy or use mobile WiMAX is also MIA at this time.

Laptop WiMAX Advantage
So what advantage does placing WiMAX in laptops bring to the market? It reduces the cost of subscriber equipment subsidies and it could place a sizable quantity of user devices in circulation. These attributes enhance the value prospect of mobile WiMAX to carriers and they should drive down the cost of mobile WiMAX devices, which is also attractive. However, we must keep in mind that deployment of national networks requires a mass market to depreciate cost. Mobile markets are defined by phones not laptops. Widespread inclusion of mobile WiMAX in mobile phones is the more important metric.

In Summary
Mobile WiMAX will not enjoy the same lift from its inclusion in laptops that WiFi enjoyed and that latter influence has been overstated. Carrier investments in previous technology migration paths, questionable performance advantages of WiMAX and high risk aversion amongst carriers are major road blocks to mobile WiMAX success, as is the carriers' reluctance to deploy new technologies. Placing WiMAX in a laptop will not overcome these obstacles nor can it empower consumers as WiFi has done.
